    Josiah Gale, Jr..

    Mr. JOSIAH GALE
    Died Decr 8 1794
    Aged 77 years.
[Note: the age at death suggests a birth about 1717 but is presumed to be overstated.]

  3. There is a great deal of nonsensical information advanced concerning Josiah Gale.
Allred, p. 111, says Josiah, b. 1717, d. 8 Dec 1794, m. Elizabeth who d. 1798 (56y) and m. (2) 1799 Mehitable Wetherall. Clearly he did not marry a second time 5 years after he died. The Elizabeth who d. 1798 was the wife of the son and it was also the son who married in 1799.
The normally reliable Ryan Amidon, on the cited Find A Grave memorial, gives the age at death as 51, despite a very clear "77" on the gravestone, transforming the father into the son. Meanwhile another memorial with no image of any gravestone nor apparent knowledge of a precise death date, claims the father d. 1782 in Sutton despite no such death listed in the Sutton VRs, nor anywhere else, nor is any such probate file found.
Source:Gale, George. Gale Family Records in England and the United States : To Which Are Added the Tottingham Family of New England, and Some Account of the, p. 52 covers the father, but does not say when he died. Of the son it only says "b. March 20, 1744; m. Elizabeth Rice, and removed to Warwick." No further coverage of this line has been found in that source.
