1861, Linn County, Missouri, Josiah enlisted in Captain Thomas H. Flood's, Price's Brigade, 3rd Regiment, 3rd Dvision, Missouri State Guards Company A. He was a private. He was captured in Lexington, Missouri and later paroled out of service. He is a United CONFEDERATE Veteran.

Later, he changed sides.

August 5, 1865 in Bookfield, Missouri, Josiah enlisted in the UNION Army, 42nd Missouri Infantry Volunteers as a private in Company A under Captain Lewis. He was mustered in on September 10, 1864 in Macou, Missouri. He was mustered out June 28, 1865.

Josiah and Rachel Pate were married at Thomas Pate's by Ed Faddis, Justice of the Peace, on March 24, 1853.

Information from Robert Jackson of Seal Beach, California: 1850 Census, District 4, Audrian County, Missouri, page 169B Elizabeth Fane, 57, female, born in Tennessee, was married within the year, but husband not listed, therefore we conclude that he died within the year. Over age 20, but can not read or write. Joseph Fane, 20, male, farmer, born in Kentucky, was married within the year. Jeramiah Fane, 18, male, born in Missouri, single. Kissiah Fane, 15, female, born in Missouri, single.
