Moved to Henniker, NH, shortly before the commencement of the Civil War where he was a farmer. On 4 Aug 1862, the town of Henniker voted to pay a $75 signing bonus to those who enlisted for at least 9 months, this may have been a strong motivator for him to enlist. For on 29 Aug 1862, he enlisted with his brother John in the 11th NH Reg. Co. D. He was severely wounded at Fredericksburg VA 13 Dec 1862 and died from those wounds 26 days later. His body was brought back to Henniker where he was buried 15 Feb 1863. He left a widow and two children.
