"Joseph was born October 23, 1838 in the small village of Buchklingen. He spent the first 43 years of his life in his native Germany until circumstances prompted him to move his family to Ohio. Their home was in the Odenwald-Bergstrasse area of Germany, east of Heidelberg...Naturalization documents record him being from Hese-Darmstadt. Orginally, we thought the City of Darmstadt was their home. Later we learned this was just the general region of their birth."
