FAMILY HISTORY: The original WORKMAN was a Puritan who fled from England to Holland, married Dutch, and lived out his life in Holland. Some of his children moved to New Amsterdam (now New York) as Dutch citizens. After the English took New Amsterdam my ancestor became a British citizen again through the naturalization process. He ran a ferry in the 1600s in New York. During the 1700s WORKMANs moved into New Jersey. Two WORKMAN cousins were in the Pennsylvania militia during the French and Indian wars in the 1760s. They served in the western Pennsylvania area and what is now West Virginia. Later they, and several other cousins or brothers, moved to West Virginia. Best guess is that about 95% of WORKMANs with West Virginia or Kentucky roots are related. Each generation had large families with a large number of sons so the WORKMAN name is widespread in those areas. http://home.earthlink.net/~k0tw/geneal.html#background CENSUS: Joseph is listed on the 1840 Ohio Census for Fayette County, Jeffersonville, page 033. Also listed is William Workman, Fayette County, Jeffersonville, page 031. In 1850 Census Joseph is listed in Allen County, Ohio and William is only Workman in Fayette County. DEATH: Joseph's death certificate states that his last known residence was Delphos, Ohio, where he died of old age. CENSUS: 1880 census states that both of Joseph's parents were born in Kentucky.
