I believe he may be the son of Joseph and Charlotte Whitten of Boontown, Morris Co., New Jersey. In the 1860 census for Pequannock, Morris Co. New Jersey, Joseph 'Witten' is 52, laborer born England; Sharlott 40; John 20; Henry 18; William W. 16; Mary 14; Joseph 12; Sarah 10; and Sharlott E. 8 -- all born Morris Co., New Jersey. {p. 734 roll 704 HeritageQuest} In the 1870 census for Warren Co, Steuben Twp, Indiana, Joseph Whitten is 23, farmer from New Jersey; with Sarah J, 20, IN. They are next to her married sister and her parents. {p. 61 / 355 roll 368 HeritageQuest} In the 1880 census for Steuben, Warren Co., Indiana, Joseph Whiteman is 34 born New Jersey (father England, mother NJ), farmer; with wife Sarah J. 30 IN (father Kentucky, mother Ohio); 'farm laborers' Charles Vanness 19 NJ (parents same); Robert Stoker 19 OH (parents same); and Cornelius Coley 21 OH; and niece Eva Compton 12 IN (parents same).{Page 56A } I have not been able to find them in the 1900 census. There is a Henry Whitten 59 from New Jersey, with family, in Pike. His widow is living next door to Joseph in 1910. It is possible they are the Joseph, age 49, and Sarah [indexed as Grace] Whitten (age 49?) found in South Omaha, ward 3, Douglas Co., Nebraska. The rest of the record is very hard to read. They seem to have a number of young men from Scotland, Ireland, and Iowa in their household -- perhaps associated with the railroad? Also, there is a Henry Whitten 59 from New Jersey, with family, in Pike. His widow is living next door to Joseph in 1910. In the 1910 census for Warren Co, Pike Twp, Indiana, Joseph C. Whitten is 60, m 1, 41 yrs, 'own income'; Sarah J, 55, 0 of 1 child living. They are next door to a [sister-in-law?] Loretta F. Whitten 63 New Jersey, widow, with 5 of 5 children living; daughter Gladys is 19 born Indiana (parents New Jersey). { roll 375, pg 216 (184-184)} In the 1920 census for Warren Co, Pike Twp, West Lebanon, Warren Co., Indiana, Joseph Whitten is 72 born New Jersey (father England, mother NJ); with wife Sally, 71 IN (parents same); and sister-in-law Mel Cronkhite 73 IN (parents same), widow. {ed 208, sh 8b, roll 473, p60 HeritageQuest} In the 1930 census for Pike, Warren Co., Indiana, there are listings for Joseph Whitten 1847 with Sarah J.
