MILITARY: DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR BUREAU OF PENSIONS WASHINGTON, D.C. August 2nd, 1898 Sir: In compliance with your recent communication, addressed to Hon. James A. Tawney, wherein you request further information concerning Joseph Wescott, a soldier in the Revolutionary War, you are advised as follows: He applied for a pension on January 22nd, 1833, at which time he was 69 years of age and residing at Peru, Clinton County, New York; in his application he alleges that he was born August 19th, 1763m at Old Middlebury, Mass. That he enlisted at Greenwich, Mass., in April 1781, in Capt. Webb's Company, Col. Henry Jackson's Regiment; while at West Point, N,Y., in the summer 1782, he was transfered to Capt. Holister's Company and served therein about six months when he was transfered to Capt. Swift's Company and served therein until June 1783, when he was discharged at Constitution Island opposite West Point. The papers on file in his claim fail to show he served as a bugler. It does not appear that his widow ever made application or received a pension for his service. Very respectfully, Mr. B. A. Man, Winona,Minn. Transcribed by William Custer Knight November 24, 2004 |
