"130. Joseph4 Welles (Capt. Robert3, John2, Gov. Thomas1), born September 1680 in Wethersfield, Connecticut (Barbour citing VR 1:17); and died before 7 January 1744/45 when his will was proved. … Joseph Welles was a lister in Wethersfield in 1712 and a tax collector there in 1715 (Stiles' Wethersfield 2:765).
He wrote a will (undated in the record book copy, the original not located in his loose probate docket papers) that names his wife Hannah and provides land for his three sons John Wells, Joshua Wells, and Joseph Wells; assigns to his three daughters Prudence, Esther and Hannah their marriage portions as their inheritances; and orders his sons to pay his unmarried daughter Eunice enough to make her equal with her sisters (Hartford Probate District, 14:166). His will was proved 7 January 1744/45 (Hartford Probate District Court, 14:54). The inventory of his estate was taken by Joseph Hurlbutt and Samuel Robbins on 28 Jan 1749; it came to £2121:07:09 (Hartford Probate District, 14:264-265). The distribution of his estate wasn't filed for nearly twenty years; being accepted by Hartford Probate District Court on 6 August 1765. The division of real estate names John the eldest son, Joseph the second son, and Joshua the third son. It was filed by Jonathan Belding, Nicholas Asquith, and Elisha Baxter (Hartford Probate District, Connecticut Estate Files, docket no. 5832, a description of the will can be found in Manwaring 3:473)."

The last will and testament of Joseph Welles of Wethersfield is as followeth: Imprimis: I give to my wife Hannah the 1-3 part of my moveable estate which I shall die seized of, to be at her own disposeing forever; and also 1-3 part of all my real estate for her improvement during the time of her natural life or so long as she remains my widow. 2ndly, I give to my two sons, John Welles and Joshua Welles, my now dwelling house and barn, with all my lands on the north side of the highway, to them and their heirs forever, to be equally divided between them. Thirdly, I give to my son Joseph Welles all the land that I bought of John Rose and my lott lying on the south side of the highway, to him and his heirs forever. Fourth, my Cow Plain lott, so called, I give to my three sons, John Welles, Joshua Welles and Joseph Welles, to be equally divided between them. Fifthly, I give to my two sons, Joshua and Joseph Welles, my 50-acre lott, to be equally divided to them and their heirs forever. Sixthly, my two swamp lots I also give to my three sons, John, Joshua and Joseph Welles, to be equally divided among them. Seventhly, I give to my son John Welles my land in Eastbury, to him and his heirs forever. Eighthly, my eastward land which I bought of Timothy Boardman and Gershom Not, my will is it shall be sold by my executors for the payment of my debts. And if any money remain, to be at my wife's disposal. Ninthly, as to my three dafters, Prudence, Esther and Hannah, I give them what they have received of my estate, and that is to be their portion. And my will is that my three sons shall equally give to my daughter Eunice Welles so much out of their parts as to make her equal with either one of my other daughters which are married. I appoint my wife Hannah and my son Joseph Welles executors.

Page 1 (Vol. XV) 13 December, 1745: Joshua Welles, a minor son of Joseph Welles, chose Joseph Hurlbut of Wethersfield to be his guardian. Recog., £200 money."
