↑ Greene writes that he is said to have died 14 3rd mo. [May] 1725 by George E. McCracken in Welcome Claimants, 501. Madeleine Howland, a professional genealogist of Swarthmore, sent proof of his living beyond the date to McCracken, who responded that it came from a study of the passengers by Meredith B. Colket Jr., FASG. Colket thus responded to Mrs. Howland: “I have not located the loose notes on which the Townsend sketch was based. In the draft I have located I support references to the dates of death of Joseph and Elizabeth with the words ‘It is stated.’ Clearly, I was not able to locate an unimpeachable contemporary source, and certainly not one that identified the place of death.” Greene suggests, “If the 14 3rd month 1725 date is a corruption of the actual date of his death, perhaps he died on 14 3m 1735.”
