    JOSEPH THROCKMORTON (John 1), b. Providence, RI, 165-; never married. He was a mariner, one of those "who go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters." He was also an extensive land owner in both East and West Jersey, as well as in New York and Penna. He probably made his home when on land with his brothers in Middletown, NJ for in the Book of Patents, 1688, he is called "Joseph Throckmorton of Middletown, gentleman."

    "1685, Dec 25, he had license to purchase Indian land, 1200 acres at Crosswicks. (NJ Coast in Three Centuries, Vol. 11, p. 294). 1687/8, Jan. 20, purchased of his brother John 474 acres in East Jersey; Feb. 20, same year, purchased from Samuel Spicer the following tracts: 1, 450 a.; 2, 9 a. at Waycack; 3, a houselot of 8 a.; 4. another lot of 8 a.; 5. six a. at Poplar Hill; 6, 12 a. on Poplar Field; 7, 120 a.; 8, six a. of meadow at Sholl Harbour Creek; also 1688, March 29, his brother John deeded him 1-10 of 1-48 share E.J., purchased from Robt. Turner (N.J. Deeds).
    Affadavit of Joseph Throckmorton. As to rough treatment of his vessel by Captain Crofts, of H.M.S. Deptford. Sworn before N. Barnard, Mayor, 4 March, 1687 (Calendar of State papers, Colonial; America & West Indies. Vol. IX).

    Joseph Throckmorton d. between Dec 2, 1689 and May 1690, probably at the Barbados. Before setting sail on his last voyage from Philadelphia he made his will, 2 Dec, 1689. He "being about to go to sea" devised "all real estate anywhere in the world to the male of John Throckmorton of East Jersey, named Joseph Throckmorton, and his heirs forever." The personal estate "to be disposed of as laws of respective places where it lies shall order. ... My brother John shall be guardian for said Joseph." Exr. John Throckmorton. Proven 19 Sep., 1690. (Rec. of Wills, Surrogate's Office, N.Y., Liber 3-4, p. 189.)

    "These are to certify to all whom it may concern that upon the second day of December 1689 att the house of George Emblem In the towne of Philadelphia I Patrick Robinson by direction of Joseph Throgmorton (since deceased) did write his will, and I was desirous the hee might bee more speciall And particluar in the disposall of his personal Estate to avoid Strife among his relations, he answered hee was In haste, and the ship undersail, And that he must be gone that tide, And I having searously askt him what he meant by the disposall of his personall estate as the Laws of the respective places whereof it lies shall order. And whither he meant not that his relatives should enjoy theire proportions thereof, hee answered that hee knew they would well enough agree one with another about it, And that it was not his designe that any one of them should carrie away the whole. And thereafter after his decease, John Throgmorton sent for me to the house of William Biddle, and after I had delivered him severall papers which I had for trust from Joseph Throgmorton, hee in the preseance of William Biddle And John Stout, askt what I thought hee meant by this disposall of his personall Estate, I told him as is above related. And I also told him the answere that his brother gave me as is above recited whereupon the said John Throgmorton answered that it should be soe. And that hee would go home And Compound with them, And that hee designed the monie due (and as then hee understood ready to be paid) from William Solway to help pay off the composure with them, to all which I am ready to sweare If thereto required by all persons therein concerned, Patrick Robinson Bulington the 4th 8ber 1690 personally appeared before me one of the Justices of the peace for west New Jersey the above Patrick robinson who did according to the Law of the said Province Solemnlie attest In the presence of God to the truth of what is above written. - Richard Basnett"

    William Biles, who was with Joseph Throckmorton in Phila. when he made his will, gave evidence at Burlington 3rd Oct., 1690, that Joseph Throckmorton told him "he would dispose of his Land as hee saw good, which he did unto his brother John's Eldest sone ... but that he made his will only for the disposure of his Lands, and that he said for his other Estate Lett them take it to whom it shall appertain by the Laws of the Province where the same Lyes" (Liber E Deeds, p. 257)
