    THOMPSON, JOSEPH PARRISH, D.D., LL.D., 1819-79; b. Philadelphia; graduated at Yale college 1838; studied theology at Andover and New Haven; ordained pastor of Chapel street Congregational church, New Haven, 1840 ; minister of Broadway Tabernacle church (Cong.), New York, 1845-71. He was one of the originators of the New Englander and the Independent, and associate editor of the latter. From 1873 until his death he resided in Berlin.
