Joseph Taylor was apprenticed as a carpenter to Edward Weston, of Harwell, in Berkshire, England, for seven years from June 10, 1699. He was probably of age at this time, but thought best to learn the trade with a view to emigration to America. He married March 16, 1700, Elizabeth Haines, of Harwell. At the Concord Monthly Meeting of Friends, Pennsylvania, 6th day of the 2nd month 1708: "Joseph Taylor, late of Old England, appeared att this meeting and produced a Certificate from freinds there which shews that he was in unity, to the satisfaction of this meeting." On November 16, 1711, he purchased 705 acres of land from Benjamin Chambers of Philadelphia on the west side of Brandywine Creek in present day Pocopson Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The land extended from a little above the forks of the creek to a point about midway between Lenape and Pocopson stations. It was originally in Kennet Township, then in Pennsbury Township in 1775 and finally Pocopson Township in 1849. On February 12, 1718/19, he purchased 50 acres on the west of the other property from Ezekiel Harlan. On April 2, 1724, he purchase 103 acres nearby from Isaac Taylor of Thornbury where he built a mill on Pocopson Creek. He connected his first and last purchase by purchasing 147 acres on January 18, 1728. On April 10, 1735 he purchased another 100 acres from Ruth Harlan, widow of Ezekial. He now owned 1105 acres on the west side of Brandywine Creek and 26 acres on the east side at Lenape station. He divided the land between his sons and gave up farming. He became a merchant or storekeeper and by the time he died his property was worth 2322 pounds. Joseph was one of the trustees at Birmingham Meeting. When he and Elizabeth died they were probably buried there.
