This establishes his actual birthday as Feb 17, 1780. All other records I have seen give it as July 17, 1780. An easy error to make; Unless a written record is quite legible, a 2 could easily be mistaken as a 7. First permanent settler in Lancaster Twp., who with his family arrived & saw Salamonie River on 15 May 1834. My teen years were spent on a farm approximately 1/2 mile east, 1/2 mile south of the two 80 acre tracts purchased from the U. S. government by Joseph Sprowl. At that time the westernmost tract was occupied and farmed by Harold Fickle. Harold had a daughter Lois and a younger son, whose name now escapes me, who boarded the school bus which I rode. Lois was a classmate of my brother Tom. For sources see William Sprowl, born about 1740. 9/23/2004: I visited the Lancaster cemetery. All the grave markers in the area where Joseph is buried were limestone, darkened with time, engraving eroded to the point of being illegible. I could not identify his specific stone. Steve Fulton, the keeper of the cemetery records, gave me his lot number. Jennie, I later learned is buried in the Masonic Cemetery at Warren. 6/7/05: Visited the Lancaster Cemetery. The grave of Joseph has been positively identified. I had arranged for his marker (which proved to be broken through his name) to be replaced. At the time of my visit, a workman was digging and forming for the new marker base. He had pulled out the broken marker; it was lying on the ground. 7/12/05: The new grave marker is in place. I retrieved the old broken one and brought it home. 7/14/05: Visited the grave to verify dates; photographed the marker. |
