Father was born in NY Mother born in NH according to 1880 census. Was appointed Postmaster at Lee Center, IL. by Pres. Jackson.
From "Portrait and Biographical Record of Lee County Ill, 1892, Chicago, Biographical Pub., p 741":
He was raising a family in Waterbury Vermont when Darius was born in April, 1816. The next August the family emigrated to Ohio, settling in Clarke County for nine years. They then moved to Licking County OH, also for about nine years, and in October 1834 left Ohio and spent the winter in Terre Haute, Indiana and in Edgar County , Illinois. In the spring they arrived in Lee County, IL on March 17, 1835, according to the 1904 History of Lee County, IL, by Bardwell, p. 821. He was a farmer there. He moved to Marshall County, IA sometime after Sarah died in 1837. They had eleven children, one of which died young. Sons Joseph, George W. and Alonzo were in the Civil War. All died during the war. Page 831 says he was an old school teacher in Vermont and Ohio, and taught for awhile in Illinois. He was the first postmaster of the old Inlet Grove post office and was a captain of a militia company in Ohio. It took 25 cents to get a letter from Pennsylvania then, but the government would trust you until the letter arrived at its destination. We heard from a lady...that they were not always able to pay the 25 cents due when the letter arrived, and the postmaster would trust them until the postage bill would amount to several dollars, then it would take the price of a calf to pay the bill. In the Lee Co., History, 1914, Stevens. p 54, "The first license to keep tavern in Ogle/Lee Co. was issued to Joseph Sawyer, who paid $10 for the license." Also Sawyer "was appoint first overseer of the poor for Lee Co. on April 16, 1840." A story in Chap. 26 & 27 of early banditti of the area seems to implicate Sawyer, although his later appointments seem to belie the fact.
