Joseph Reid was born on 9th May 1888 in Manhattan, New York City. He was the son of Mary Reid, formerly Shields, and her husband Stephen Reid, a bricklayer. He appears in each census from 1900 to 1920 living with his parents at East 161st Street in the Bronx. By 1910 he was working as an electrician. Some time between 1910 and 1920 Joseph married a woman named Ella, and by the time of the 1920 census they had a son.

Joseph's father Stephen visited Ireland in 1921. On his return voyage he indicated that he was going to join his son "Major J.S. Reid, 967 Sherman Avenue, Bronx, New York", suggesting that Joseph had served in the army, almost certainly during the First World War.

Joseph has yet to be traced after 1921.
