Facts and Events
Served in King Philip's war, 1676; took the oath of allegiance at Newbury in 1678. Like his father and grandfather, Joseph was active in community affairs. He represented the town in the hiring of a schoolmaster; served on committees to divide common lands and lay out highways; was a fence-viewer; was a constable; and in 1690 became Deputy for Newbury to General Court. Killed by Indians with Richard Long while journeying from Newbury to Haverhill at a place called Pond Plain. "The enemy lay in a deserted house by the way, or a clump of bushes, or both."
