He was one the executors of his father-in-law's (James Driver) will. Joseph's parents were Samuel Paden (b: 1730 in County Antrim, Ireland) and Lydia Potter (b: 1728 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania). Samuel Peden in turn was a son of Joseph Peden (b. England 1700 as son of the chief baker to London's royal family). Joseph witnessed the will of an East Finley neighbor, John Templeton, circa 1801. The call for soldiers was heard by the young. "Believe it or not," school scholars from the ages of ten to eighteen left school in the North. About a million left home and school, up to my age, near eighteen. Government rolls tell the story. In the 1790 census, his numbers were 1-2-3-0-0 In the 1800 census, his numbers were 1-1-0-1-0-1-0-0-1-1 In the 1810 census, his numbers were 3-2-1-1-0-0-2-0-0-1-0-0-0 From Mark Amanns The earliest-known Peden ancestor was JOSEPH PEDEN who was Presbyterian, chief baker for a royal family in London, and from Ayrshire which is 40 miles from Glasgow in western Scotland. His son JOSEPH PEDEN was born about 1700 in northern Ireland. His son SAMUEL PEDEN was born 1730 county Antrim in Ireland and is the progenitor of the Peden/Pedan/Paden families in America. He came to America by 1850, married LYDIA POTTER in 1751, had 6 children, lived in Lancaster, York & Washington Counties in Pennsylvania, and died after 1710, perhaps by 1830. He was admitted to the Society of Friends (Quakers) 13 Oct 1770 and disowned in 1771. C. W. Peden wrote this in a letter in 1982: "Samuel PEDEN (1730-1830) arrived in York County, PA in 1750 as indicated, but he had been in America since about 1743 or 1744. His father, Joseph (b.1700) gave Samuel Permission to serve an apprenticeship with a Ship Captain with the promise that Samuel would be made a Captain in return. The unscrupulous Captain sold Samuel to Robert Smith, a market gardener, as an apprentice upon the ship's arrival in Baltimore. Thus we estimate that Samuel first reached America c. 1743-1744, at age 13 or 14. We do know that having served his apprenticeship, Samuel received a horse, saddle and cash, rode from Baltimore to York County, PA in 1750 (age 20). There he married Lyida POTTER in 1751, settled in Lancaster County, PA where all 6 of their children were born. In later years they returned to York County, then to Washington County. Samuel last returned to York County where he died in 1830, age 100." The following dates are birth or birth/death dates except for wives which dates are marriage dates and some may be approximate:
