Information on Joseph Neilson

Joseph Neilson was one of the white housejoiners hired by President Thomas Jefferson in the 1770s. He fathered a son, John Hemings (1776-aft. 1830) with one of Jefferson's slaves, Elizabeth "Betty" Hemings, who had (according to some historians) previously had three children with John Wayles, the father-in-law of Thomas Jefferson. Since Neilson and Elizabeth "Betty" Hemings were not married, their son took his mother's surname. (Source: Thomas Jefferson Monticello, [1])
