    "Burying-Grounds were laid out at an early period, but the date is unknown. The monument on the Hill Burying-Ground, containing the inscription, "JOSEPH MERRIAM, AGED 47 YEARS, DIED THE 20 OF APRIL, 1677" is the oldest in town.
