Joseph Abraham Meredith, born 1760 in Bear Creek, Louisa County, Virginia; died October 24, 1840 in Grayson Springs, Grayson County, Kentucky. He was the son of Capt William Meredith and Elizabeth Henry. He married Nancy Skaggs 1780 in Bear Creek, Russell, Virginia Joseph Abraham Meredith:
The Meredith name was orginally spelled Maredudd and is a fore name of considerable antiquity with only the names Grufudd (Griffiths) and Llewelyn being any older and still in modern use. The name first appeared in the late 8th Century and was the given name of the son of the ancient Welsh princes of Deheubarth and later also some of the sons of the royal family of Gwynedd. It mean "great" or "bright" "lord" ... the name originated in the old county of Rodnorshire...in Welsh... the stress is on the middle syllable "mer-ED-dith"

Joseph Abraham Meredith married the daughter of Charles Skaggs and Lucinda Thompson. When the Skaggs' moved to Kentucky in the 1790's Joseph and his wife moved with her family. He eventually settled on Rock Creek in 1809 in southeastern Grayson County and established the first flour and grist mill in that area.
