From book - "White Pine Lang Syne" ... and of Joseph Meister holding claims where $30,000 had been taken. ... Joseph Meister was another unforgettable character. He and his wife Mary reared seven children. He owned a mine high on the mountain called the Rosemary. It was so high that a horse and buggy could be used only part way up the mountain, and the rest of the climb was made by "Shanks Pony." Meister was a German, and old-timers say he was severe and demanding. His daughters donned hobnailed boots and men's clothing to go into the mine and work like men. They wore turbans over their long beautiful hair and sometimes did not get it combed for a week at a time.
