J.P. Leggett was the founder of bedspring manufacturer, and now Fortune 500 company, Leggett & Platt. He was three times mayor of Carthage between 1906 and 1912.

His large 1901 home] built of Carthage marble located at 1106 Grand operated for several years as a bed and breakfast.
