In a drill in Greenville about 1888, in which all regiments of the State competed, he won the prize for best drilled man, Daniel, his brother, standing second and George Pryor third....Joe won the honor of wearing the handsome gold medal for the best drilled man in the company so many times that it was presented to him when he left Greenville to accept a position with the Western RR. at Selma, Ala. While a small boy he saved his brother Jap from drowning twice. Married first, Emma Haralson at Selma. She died one year later after the birth of their child, Emma Haralson Knight, who married Alvin Yates Dowell, and now resides in Washington, D.C. Joe was married a second time to Malena Smyly Kirkpatrick at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Selma, on Nov. 21, 1901, by Rev. T.J. Crosby.......He owned his own home at 114 Mabry St., Selma, but during 1931-32 resided at Hazen where he was president of the Kirkpatrick Mercantile Co. He was converted in Selma and was baptised into Baptist Church and remained a consistant member of that church several years, but later he united with the church of his wife's choice, the Episcopal."
