This note puts forth the wording in the Marraige bond of Joseph Hurdle:

STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

Know all men by these presents, that we JOSEPH HURDLE and JERIMIAH SEXTON are held and firmly bound unto his Excellency GABRIEL HOLMES, Esquire, Govenor, Captain Generaland Commander in Chief of the State aforesaid, in th ejust and full sum of FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS, current money of the State aforesaid, to be paid to his said Excellency the Governor, his Sucessors or Assigns: To the which payment well and truly to be made, we do bind ourselves, and each of us, our and each of our Heirs, Executors, Administrators and Assigns, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents/ Sealed with our seals, and dated this 10th Day of July One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty Four.

The condition of this obligation is such, That whereas the above bounden JOSEPH HURDLE hath made application for a licence for a marriage between him and Candace Berryman of the county of Gates. Now in case it shall not appear that hereafter that there is any lawful cause to obstruct the said Marriage, then this obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.
