His wife Ellen (née Womack) had died just a few months previously. 1881 - Living at Chellaston, Derby England, with his second wife, 6 children (apparently 4 from his first marriage and 2 from the second), a step-son and 2 domestic servants. A brass plaque on the East wall inside the Chellaston Church, to the left of the window, reads: To the Glory of God and in loving memory of / Revd Joseph Hughes B A / of Emmanuel College Cambridge 27 years Vicar of this Parish / died October 28th 1899 aged 67 years / This tablet is erected by his widow / Grant him O Lord eternal peace and may light perpetual shine on him. |
