1899 - Buried, aged 67 years, by John J Singleton, Vicar of Melbourne. A brass plaque on the East wall inside the Chellaston Church, to the left of the window, reads: To the Glory of God and in loving memory of / Revd Joseph Hughes B A / of Emmanuel College Cambridge 27 years Vicar of this Parish / died October 28th 1899 aged 67 years / This tablet is erected by his widow / Grant him O Lord eternal peace and may light perpetual shine on him.
