- On p. 7 of Hubbard Genealogy is described a deed [Worcester Deed Book 37, p. 17], dated 23 Feb 1744 from Joseph Hubbard of Concord to his son Joseph Hubbard of Holden. This proves the parentage of Joseph, important since some sources (e.g., Source:Crane, Ellery B. Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County, Massachusetts, p. 4:365; Source:Day, Edward Warren. One Thousand Years of Hubbard History, 866 to 1895, p. 226) claim Joseph Hubbard of Holden's parents were Samuel Hubbard and Sarah Clark, and that he married "Phebe (Buckley?)". Even without the deed, these alternate parents were unlikely. First, there is no birth record for a son Joseph in Samuel's family, while the recorded birth of the son of Joseph matches the age at death exactly. Second, by record his wife wasn't Buckley, but Brigham, suggesting the examination of sources wasn't very thorough. Third, his age at death suggests a birth in 1715 which is a tight fit in Samuel's family between Samuel b. 1714 and Sarah b. 1716. Fourth, it would be difficult to explain a first daughter named Rebecca, a son named Peter, a grandson named Bulkley (born to son Joseph, probably why they thought Phebe's maiden name was "Buckley"), and no children named either Samuel or Sarah born to Joseph and Phebe of Holden.
The only reason for proposing this "fictitious Joseph, son of Samuel" (quoting Hubbard) is because there is a Concord marriage record on 18 Aug 1743 for "Joseph Hurbard" and Abigail Brown, which many people think was the son of Joseph and Rebecca. Therefore, another Joseph must be invented to marry Phebe Brigham. Even Source:Jacobus, Donald Lines. Bulkeley Genealogy, p. 416 (as well as the ones mentioned above) shows Abigail Brown as the wife of the son of Joseph. However, this appears to be the only mention of Joseph and Abigail that can be found as Jacobus is unable to give a death date for Joseph, and adds "Children not found". Since the deed shows that the Joseph of Holden was the son of Joseph of Concord, and since the Joseph of Holden married Phebe Brigham, either 1) this Abigail Brown died almost immediately after their marriage (no such record found), or 2) a different Joseph Hubbard married Abigail Brown, or 3) it is a corrupted copy of the marriage of Joseph's brother Thomas Hubbard to Abigail Brown 1 Nov 1753.
