                       Joseph C. Hipley, 78, of Scottville, passed away Saturday, Sept. 18 at Baywood Nursing Home.

Joseph was born Aug. 22, 1921, in Crystal Township, the son of John and Bertha (Brunk) Hipley. He grew up and attended school in Weare Township, Oceana County. He was married Jan. 26, 1957 in Ludington to Leona Terryn and she preceded him in death in 1995. He worked for Lappo Lumber in Muskegon, prior to working for Teledyne Continental in Muskegon as an assembly line worker making engines for Jeeps and tanks for the Army, retiring after 30 years. He served with the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the Custer VFW Gold Bar Post No. 5096, the Edwin H. Ewing Post 76, The American Legion in Ludington, and the UAW/CIO in Muskegon. He was an avid gardener, woodworker, card player and bird watcher. He also traveled extensively with his wife following his retirement. Surviving are one son, Charles Dillon (and Carolyn) Hipley of Florida; three stepchildren, Connie Duncil of Scottville, Lawrence (and Yvonne) Goosen of Wisconsin, and Diana (and Thomas) Nelson of Okemos; two brothers, John (and Ida) Hipley of Dearborn and Donald (and Beatrice) Hipley of Pentwater; one sister, Cecelia (and Wayne) Holmes of Eaton Rapids; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death, in addition to his wife, Leona, and his parents, by one sister, Elizabeth Hipley and one granddaughter, Denise. Mass of Christian burial for Mr. Hipley will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22 at St. Jerome Catholic Church, Scottville, with the Rev. Isidro Gargantiel celebrant. Interment will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Scottville, where the Custer VFW Gold Bar Post 5096 will hold military graveside services. The family will be at the Stephens Funeral Home to receive friends Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider donations to the American Lung Association.
