"9. Joseph3 Gates (Joseph2, George1), born December 25, 1695 (Haddam record) or December 28, 1696 (East Haddam record). … He was a Selectman in 1740 and 1741 and a farmer by occupation. He was usually called "Sergeant Joseph" and he was probably the Lieutenant Joseph Gates who served in the French and Indian War during the campaign of 1756. His wife joined the First Church, November 7, 1725 and he joined, March 7, 1730/1. … Joseph Gates suffered the loss of three young children in less than a week in 1740, followed by the death of a fourth child in 1742 and his wife's death on March 20, 1744. He died, November 1, 1770, in his 73rd year. They were buried in the Cove Burial Ground."
