Information copied rom the RootsWeb database of Peggy Haynie: Joseph Newton "Joe Biff" Fields lived in the 10th Distri c t of Carroll County, son of Joseph Newton and Maude Loran c e Fields. Joe Biff was president of the Senior Class, pr es ident of the All-Student Club, and All M.V.C. End in Foo tba ll while a student at Bethel.For many years Bethel Coll eg e had a Prep School for High School students. This wa s th e school Joe Biff chose. The choice was made becaus e of th e Football program; he played four years in Prep sc hool an d four years in college. After graduation from Hig h Schoo l in 1924, Joe went to Ohio and worked for U. S. St eel an d Baltimore & Ohio Railroad; in 1931 he entered Beth el Coll ege and received a B.S. degree in mathematics in 19 35. Aft er graduation he began teaching mathematics and ch emistry a t Kenton High School in Kenton, Tennessee. In th e meantim e he received a Masters Degree in Mathematics. W hile at Ke nton he met and married one of his students Mis s Charley Ed wards. The name Charley was given to his wif e by her fathe r, he had five daughters and was wishing fo r a boy, but ano ther girl came along so he just called he r 'Charley'. At t he beginning of the World War II, Mr. Fi elds was called int o service with the rank of 1st Lieutena nt. He taught Gunne ry in Illinois. From 1943 to 1946 h e was stationed at Bana na River Florida with the Navy as i nstructor in Navigatio n for Long Range Bombers. One of th e duties was to take hi s students on their final flight be fore going into combat.F rom 1946-1977 Mr. Fields was profe ssor of mathematics at La mar University at Beaumont, Texas.
