His death certificate gives his birthdate as March 4, 1860 instead of the White Hall record date of March 14, 1860, and his father's name is given as Fredrick Dentz and the mother's maiden name as Mary Ellen Showers. Joseph's sister provided information and that he was widowed.

It was his sister Maria's son, Harry, who cared for him the last 18 years of his life.
