[edit] About Joseph ColvilleADVISORY NOTE: Some sources claim that Joseph Colville was a son of Andrew Colville, brother of Samuel Colville, but herein lies the confusion: Joseph Colville's father Samuel died in 1780 (probably in Revolutionary War). After the death of his father, he chose Andrew Colville (his Uncle and brother of Samuel) as his guardian. So Joseph was RAISED by Andrew, but Samuel was his father. This is also confirmed in "Colville of Tennessee" http://mhrising.com/Ozarks%20Families/colville_of_tennessee.htm COLVILLE of Tennessee Joseph Colville was b. 6 July 1764 in Frederick Co. (or Washington) Virginia and d. 1834 loc. not stated. Joseph was the son of Samuel Colville and his wife Elizabeth Young. Lusk Colville was living in Warren Co. Tennessee in the 1820s. From: Chuck Gibson <cathal@@flash.net> Subject: [COWAN-L] Cowan, Colville, Woods and Walker Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 11:31:33 -0600 Hello All! What follows is a reply to a post on the Wigton-Walker list. Thought someone might have a connection or information on these lines. This is my line also.
Wasn't there a William Cowan b. 1701 married to a Elizabeth Woods and parents of William b. 1750 and Samuel? Also, you'll find the Colville family that the grandson of William and Elizabeth, James Walker Cowan, married into was also in this same area. Joseph Colville, father of Catherine and father in law of James Walker Cowan was b. 1764 in Washington Co VA and died 1834 in Warren Co Tn. Josephs parents were Andrew and Mary Craig Colville. Joseph had another dau. Elizabeth who married Robert Cowan 1808 in McMinn Co Tn. Here's part of a DAR record for Andrew: Joseph Colville and Katherine Lusk, (snip) of Andrew Colville and Mary Craig, his wife. Andrew Colville (1739-97) gave valiant service and led his company at the battle of King's Mountain under Col. William Campbell. He was born in Frederick County; died in Wythe County, Va. I keep thinking I saw Broad Meadows in the McClung book, I'm digging now. Chuck Gibson References
