Mr. Clements was born in Polk County, Texas, December 1, 1849, being 78 years of age at the time of his death. Prior to coming to New Mexico Mr. Clements was for 27 years a resident of Kimball county, Texas. Mr. Clements came to New Mexico from Kimble county 30 years ago, first going to Hope and later coming to this city, where he has extensive interests in the raising of sheep.

Mr. Clements was one of the organizers of the Bank of Commerce and served as its first president, a position which he held for two years. Mr. Clements was recognized as one of the largest and most successful sheep growers of Chaves county and one of the most successful men of the southwest.

"Joe" Clements, as he was affectionately known by his great host of friends in New Mexico, was a man absolutely honest, fearless and conscientious. He was a man whose word was good as his bond, a man about whom there was no show and no glamor and a man who knew the west and its ways as few other men do.

In the passing of Joe Clements, Roswell and the state of New Mexico has lost one of its best and most substantial citizens.
