Joseph Eulis Carroll 92, of Indianapolis, passed away November 28, 2006 at the Wildwood Health Care Center. He was born January 9, 1914 in Indianapolis, the son of Lycurgus and Elizabeth Carroll. He attended Indianapolis Public School #47 and graduated from Warren Central High School in 1931. He also attended Indiana Central College and Indiana University, where he was a member of the varsity baseball team. He married Margaret C. Laughner on February 14, 1941 and she preceded him in death on November 13, 1998.
Mr. Carroll was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He served as a medical technician at the base hospital at Camp Ruston, Louisiana. While at Camp Ruston he assisted with physical examinations for the crew of the captured German submarine U-505, which is now on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. From 1946 to 1947, he worked for the Delco-Remy Division of General Motors in Anderson, Indiana and for General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) in Richmond, Indiana. From 1947 to 1967, Mr. Carroll was Vice-President and General Manager of Allen Chevrolet Inc. in Cambridge City, Indiana, where he lived from 1948 until 2004. He also worked for the Land Acquisition Division of the Indiana State Highway Department from 1967 until his retirement in 1979. Additionally, he served for 4 years as the Jackson Township Assessor and served 8 years as the Jackson Township Trustee in Wayne County, Indiana.
Mr. Carroll was also extremely active in his community of Cambridge City, Indiana as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, K of P Lodge and American Legion Post #169. He was an avid golfer, who was a charter member of Hartley Hills Country Club in Hagerstown, Indiana and a member of the Elks Country Club in Richmond, Indiana. Mr. Carroll was a lifelong fan of all sports, but he had a special place in his heart for baseball, especially his beloved Chicago Cubs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Forrest, Cecil and Harold and his daughter, Barbara S. Williams. Survivors include his son, Joseph S. (Katie) Carroll of New Palestine, Indiana; a sister, Alline Harvey of Napa, California; a son-in-law Stewart Williams of Lowell, Indiana; two sisters-in-law Ruth Carroll of Brooksville, Florida and Polly Carroll of Monroe, Louisiana; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday November 30, 2006 at Waskom Capitol Hill Chapel, 1010 E. Main St., Cambridge City, Indiana. The funeral service will be held on Friday December 1, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the burial at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis.
