In 1848 Joseph sold his home in Sandyville, which he inherited from his father, to John Dickson and emigrated to Liberty Twp., Van Wert, Ohio, where his father-in-law had settled. Here he found rich black swamp land requiring clearing and draining. He owned lot 234 bought 16 Oct. 1855 and lost 235 on 31 Dec 1855. On 29 April 1867 he sold this farm and moved to Green Lake Twp., Kandiyohi County, Minnesota and settled on land that was a part of Spicer, Minn. Joseph and his son George Washington Cable were elected to public office in town and county. Joseph Cable donated land for a cemetery west of Spicer. His wife died in 1868 and was the first person buried there. 15 Dec 1874 he married Elizabeth Harbaugh Tinney. Joseph moved his family overland to Bunkerhill, Kansas in 1875 where his brother-in-law George Alexander Exline and his sister-in-law Mahala Jane Exline Shell had settled. He died a short time after he had arrived in Bunkerhill, Kansas and staked out a claim. He is buried in the Russell Kansas cemetery. His son George Washington and daughter Emma Jane Cable are also buried there. After his death, his widow took her daughter and returned to Ohio and the children of Joseph remained to prove up on the claim.
