...149 Joseph Grove John Bend (1762-1812) was born in New York and reared in Barbados. He was prominent throughout his adult life as a leading clergyman in the Maryland Protestant Episcopal Church. A close associate of the first bishop of Maryland, the Right Reverend Thomas John Claggett. Dr. Bend served as the rector of St. Paul's parish in Baltimore from 1791 until his death. In association with Roman Catholic Bishop John Carroll and a Presbyterian clergyman, Reverend Patrick Allison, he helped establish the first public library in Baltimore, the Library Company.
