Michael Kontz tells me that Hartmann came from Mezoebereny, Hungary and supposedly had 8 or 10 sons.
Bartolf has also been spelled Bardolph.
In the Semlak Newsletter, Folge 4, June 1989, Mathias Bartolf (great grandson of Hartmann) explains how Hartmann's nickname came about. He was called "Hartuz." The Hart obviously comes from Hartmann, but the tuz comes about because of his selling his wares. Hartmann was a basket weaver and would sell the baskets by the dozen (dutzendweise) in the market (probably Arad). The Romanians couldn't say "dutzend" and said instead, "tuz." Hence the nickname Hartuz.
Josef Bartolf lived at house number 483 at the time of his death. He was 79 years old. He was a widower at the time of his death. His death was the 47th in 1891.
