Joseph's parents, Joseph and Phebe Balcom of Mendon, are described in Source:Crane, Ellery B. Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County, Massachusetts, p. 14. However, Crane's description of Joseph and Phebe of Mendon is confusing. In particular, Crane's Joseph has a will dated 5 Mar 1732-33 where he describes Joseph as his oldest son, i.e., older than the brother Samuel, who, in his featured article, is said to be "born in Bristol, Rhode Island, about 1710". It appears the correct Samuel was born in Uxbridge 10 Mar 1726-7. Also, the will cuts off a daughter Martha Comstock for disobedience, which seems odd because a daughter b. 1714 is almost too young to be married by early 1733, before she even turns 17. Possibly this is the disobedience referred to?
