Jonathan Starr (1740-1823)

In 1757 he volunteered as a soldier for the relief of Fort William Henry. In 1785 he sold nine acres of land at Rattle Hill in Danbury, CT. Later he sold more land, and moved to Butternuts (Morris), Otsego County, New York where his son was living. At this time, the country west of the Hudson River was then almost an entire wilderness, and the only road from Catskill west was a footpath or Indian trail. At that time General Jacob Morris, Judge Francbot and a few others were the only inhabitants of Morris.

His niece, Rachel Starr (b. 4/30.1784, d. 1845 in IL) visited him from CT and taught school at Butternuts, NY one winter. She married Walter Lull (son of Deacon Joseph and Mary Lull) of Butternuts. They settled in Holland Purchase in western NY, where he met his death by a fall from a log barn he was helping to build.
