- ↑ Source:Allred, Marilyn. Town of Warwick, Franklin County, Massachusetts, Genealogical Records 1739-1900, Births, Marriages,, p. 254, 255, indicates that both this Jonathan, and his son Jonathan, m. 3 Jun 1804 Mrs. Hannah Holton of Gill, MA. The marriage is recorded in Gill and isn't very helpful, but the intention is in Warwick and calls the husband "Mr Jonathan Smith of Warwick". This appears to be this man. That suggests his wife is the possibly the widow of Nathan Holton, nee Hannah Ware, according to History of Northfield, p. 462, which says Nathan and others petitioned to be annexed to Gill (p. 347).
It appears from deeds that in 1810, this Jonathan sold his farm in Warwick to his son Levi (Franklin deed Vol. 27, p. 581. No wife signed the deed, which may or may not be significant.
There are several birth and census records that appear to show the sons of this Jonathan living in Barre, Vermont, and, so, based largely on the Find A Grave memorial created by Ryan Amidon, long-time Warwick researcher, the death date of 1817 with an appropriate age in Vermont is assumed to be this Jonathan.
The son Jonathan Jr. is shown living in Barre, Vermont, in the 1800 census (see below). Deeds show Jonathan Smith Jr. of Barre acquiring and selling land in Warwick (Franklin Deeds: Vol. 33, p. 479 buys "Mason Farm" of 117 acres and additional land in Warwick from brother Levi; Vol. 36, p. 542, where he sells "Mason Farm"; Vol. 39, p. 326 where he sells part of the additional land.)
Jonathan Smith is a common name, there being one "of Orange", for example, who d. Athol 1823 with a widow named Hannah, bp. in Athol in 1772 and of the same age as Jonathan Smith Jr., but a different man, s/o Aaron and Mary Smith of Athol.
