The 5th Troop of Virginia Light Dragoons was organized in Virginia by Henry (Harry) Lee, who was only 20 years old, and who bought the outfits and uniforms for his troops. The enlisted men wore blue coats and trousers and narrow-brimmed hats, carried long knives stuck inside their leather boots which came almost up to their knees. Officers had short blue capes lined with white silk and shiny helmets with white horse-hair plumes. Harry's lieutenant was 20, his two ensigns were 18 and 17. Most of his troop were in late teens, the youngest 16, the oldest 24 (the Sergeant Major).

In April 1778, 20 men from Cecil County enlisted in Lee's Partisan Cavalry. Much of the action was guerilla warfare, often "Forlorn Hopes" or suicide missions.

Also, much of time was spent foraging for food to feed Washington's soldiers, gathering horses and wagons, especially from suspected Tories or people who claimed religious convictions as an excuse against fighting.
