"10. Jonathan Rootes, son of Josiah of Beverly (4), b. a. 1666 in Beverly, Mass. He was the youngest son of Josiah Sr., and inherited his remaining property on coming of age. … In 1687 be was in possession of bis property, as in that year be gave conveyances of certain lots of land to various parties. In some of these documents he is spoken of as a 'fisherman of Marblehead,' at other times as 'of Beverly.' On the 9th of May, 1687, he acknowledged the receipt of all the property from the administrators of his father's estate, discharging them from any further claims or demands 'from the Beginning of ye world unto this day.' In 1694—4—8m. [October 4, 1694] 'Jonathan Rootes and his wife were dismissed from the Salem church to the church about gathering in Middleboro, or if the br. (brethren) object, to the church at Plymouth.' It does not appear from the records of either of these churches that he went to either place or joined either church. This was shortly after his mother, Mrs. Susannah Rootes, bad been imprisoned and shackled for witchcraft, and it may be supposed that he did not entertain any too good an opinion of the people of Salem. He prob. m. Abigail Gale of Marblehead. He d. before 1729, as she was received into full communion in the Marblehead church, Feb. 2, 1729, and she had m. _____ Deveraux. The name is recorded Abigail Gale (Roots m.) now Deveraux."
