  3.   Source:Morse, Abner. Memorial of the Morses, p. 74, shows Jonathan as the son of Joseph Morse and Susanna Shattuck, but gives his birth about 1680 without letting us know that the father died 1677. Most sources (e.g., History of Marlborough, p. 416; Bond, p. 372; Shattuck Memorials, p. 67) ditch the birth estimate but keep the parents. Savage, p. 3:240, seems to believe the birth estimate is reasonable and the parents questionable. There is no birth record for Jonathan in Groton, and apparently no age at death. It is not explained why his birth is estimated to be about 1680. Presumably, it is due to the date of marriage, since a birth before 1677 makes him a little old at his marriage in 1706, about 30. Jonathan and his wife Mary named no children Joseph or Susanna, but they did name a daughter Abigail, which raises an alternate possibility that Jonathan was the posthumous son of Joseph's brother Jonathan Morse who m. Susanna's sister Abigail Shattuck. The birth of that Jonathan was 23 Jan 1686/87 (Watertown Records, p. 1:59), but sources don't seem to have any further information on him. This birthdate would make him not quite 21 at the time of marriage in 1706, so he is not a clearcut choice, but unlike the other candidate, he has a recorded birth, so we know he actually existed?
