Facts and Events
Martha McCullough Ogle told stories to her children, including Jeanette Ogle Findley, about her family. She had heard these stories as she was growing up from her Great-Aunt, Sarah Morehouse. Jonathon R. Morehouse and Elizabeth Story had six children. Elizabeth and three children died in a plague. Three daughters survived. Jonathon married second, a widow, Catherine E. (nee?) Squire, b. Vigo County, IN, d. January 23, 1923 at the home of her daughter (Molly) Mary Squire Musselman in Paris, Edgar County, IL. Catherine Squire Morehouse had two living children from her previous marriage to C. W. Squire, who had died in the Civil War. (Her obituary states that a third daughter had died at birth.) Together Jonathon and Catherine had a son called Roll [pronounced "Rawl".] From an unknown source (she didn't write it down), Martha Ogle learned that on April 28, 1919, Catherine E. Morehouse was entered as a distracted person (legally declared so). Her grandson Walter Morehouse was also declared demented. Martha Ogle was told by Sarah Morehouse, that she and her sisters were to inherit their parents' farm. However, Catherine and her daughters locked Jonathon Morehouse in a bedroom, declared him insane, and took away his property. Upon his death, his daughters inherited only 100 acres to be divided among them. Apparently her daughters learned the lesson well, for Catherine was later "entered as a distracted person." Kate Hipple McCullough told her daughter, Martha Ogle, that she remembered visiting her grandfather and thought him to be a kind, gentle man. Sarah worked in Moll Musselman's home as a servant until she fell and injured herself. Since she was no longer able to work, she was literally put out on the street, and had to go to the home of her niece Anna Hipple Wilson, being made to walk there in spite of her injury. She was dearly loved by all of the Hipple family. On a visit to the "old Morehouse place" sometime between 1971 and 1985, Martha Ogle visited with the owners (at that time) Martha Jane Black Fox and her husband. She was shown the papers on the house and made the following notes: Land Book p. 51 / US to Aloysius Brown Dec. 3, 1834 / Land Entered: School Lot No. 11 containing 40 acres according to government survey.
