"Jonathan Miller, my paternal grandfather, who descended from German parentage, was born at or near Funkstown, Washington County, Maryland, probably in the year 1759, or possibly in 1760. In his early boyhood his parents removed to Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, where he grew to manhood, married Mary Hickman, (his cousin) who was also born of German parentage, at Funkstown, Maryland, her family also having removed to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in her childhood. Their marriage was probably in the year 1780 or 1781. From this marriage they reared a numerous family on sons and daughters, six of whom grew to manhood and womanhood, and all married and nearly all lived to old age."
