Jonathan Fairbanks (1594 – December 5, 1668) was an English colonist born in Heptonstall, Halifax, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England who immigrated to New England in 1633. Around 1641 Fairbanks built the Fairbanks House in Dedham, Massachusetts which is today the oldest surviving wood-framed house in North America.
Fairbanks, Alaska was named after his descendant U.S. vice president Charles Warren Fairbanks. [edit] WillReprinted in NEHGR, 19:32 (1865). On record at Suffolk County, Mass, June 1, 1668. I, Jonathan Farebanck, of Dedham, in the Countie of Suffolke, senior, being sick and weake, and expecting that the day of my dissolution is drawing nigh, make this my last will. I Give unto Grace my wife, all and Every part and parcell of my whole moveable Estate whatsoever....All unto my said wife, to dispose of when and to whome shee shall at any time see meete. I Give to my said wife, an annuety of £28 p' ann. to bee paid to her or her assignes to her vse yearely, in two equall parts...during her life. ... To George Farebanck, my second son, and his heires, forever, £16, the one halfe to bee paid him within the yeare next Ensuing after the decease of my wife. [Describes land and shop already given] And then my mind is, that my dau. Mary, shall have her first payment within the first yeare of my wives decease, otherwise she is to tarry til the second year. I give my dau. Mary, the wife of Christopher Smith the sum of £16, which I give to my said dau. distinct from her husband's estate... [explains terms are to be same as George's] To Jonas Farebanck my third sonn, and to his heires forever, the like sum of £16... Unto Jonathan Farebanck, my youngest sonne, and his heires, the like sum of £16... [same terms as above, all are to be paid in order each year] I give to Sarah, the eldest dau. of my son John Farebanck one yong beast between one and 2 years of age. And more, three points to be paid by my Executor when she shall attain Lawfull Age. To my sonn in Law, Ralph Day, 40s., to bee paid within six monthes after my wives decease. I give to Each of the fowre Children of the said Ralph, which he had by my dau. Susan, his late wife, 40s., to be paid them severally, as they shall attain Lawfull Age, provided all my other Legacies to my Three sonns and my dau. bee first paid, in manner as is above exprest. To John Farebanck, my Eldest sonn, all my Houses and Lands whatsoever and not being formerly above in this my will disposed of, together with my Common Rights and Towne privileges whatsoever, to him and his heirs forever, to enter upon all my Lands forthwith after my decease.... I ordain John Farebanck, my Eldest sonn, to bee my sole Executor. I entreat my very Loving friends Mr. Eliazer Lusher and Peter Woodward senior to be Overseers. Witnesses deposed Jan. 26, 1668[9].
