Listed in the 1870 Nacogdoches County, Texas Census as Jonothan J. Choat, age 10, born TX, cannot read or write. With parents and siblings.

Listed in the 1880 Nacogdoches County, Texas Census, District 53, page 279C, enumerated in June, Dwelling 84, Household 87 as J. J. Choat, age 19, married within the census year, Farmer, born TX, father born TN, mother born SC. With wife E.L.

According to handwritten family tree records from Pauline Moses, " George C. had 2 brothers, J.J. Jr. and Hardey. J.J. Jr. -- 2 sons, D.B. and Wm. Nathan - (barely 16) joined the army in 1860, they were in the heavy artillery, fought at Galveston Island. The Federals captured it, so they stayed on and recaptured it in 1863. D.B. filed for disability, Feb. 7, 1900 in Hill Co. TX. They were all in the same Co. of Capt. Beulton, but all in heavy artillery Regiment of Col. J.J. Cook. This will be in Civil War History Books." Since J.J. Jr. was born in 1860, then this information can't be entirely correct. Perhaps she had the relations mixed up, though, and perhaps these two men were still part of our family, maybe cousins?
