John appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings at The Riddy, a small group of cottages which stood in open fields a little way to the south-east of the town. The family was still there in 1851, when John was described as an apprentice shoemaker.

John died as a young man when he was only 24 years old. He was buried at Hitchin on 10th May 1856. His parents both survived him.
