It is thought that the family lived near the River Exe prior to the Conquest, and the ancient manor house which stood on the river midaway between Exeter and Exmouth, was part of the royal demesne settled on Editha, the consort of Edward the Confessor. The only remnants of this now are in the name of the Woodbury Road railway station. There was a Woodbury castle, the entrenchments of which were visible as late as 1798. References
