John Whitmer was born in Lancaster County, Pa. He married Catherine Valde Tarwater and their first child was born in Fredericksburg (Lebanon County), PA in 1778. Sometime between 1778 and 1787, the birth of their fourth child, John and Catherine moved to Clearspring, Washington County, MD and then to Botetourt County, VA.

Probably in 1812 they moved to Bremen, Muhlenberg County, KY, where they lived the rest of their lives.
