  1. Lehman, Luzurne, Pennsylvania, in United States. 1840 U.S. Census Population Schedule. (National Archives Microfilm Publication M704).

John Whiteman, with the following family (including himself):
    - 1 white male 60-69
    - 1 white female 50-59
    - 1 white female 30-39
    - 1 white male 20-29
    - 1 white female 15-19
    - 1 white female 10-14

This would appear to be this John Whiteman, who was known to have moved to Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and whose son, Daniel J Whiteman, is in the same census, also in Lehman, Luzerne, Pennsylvania. It is not clear who all the family members are. Several unsourced records indicate that John's wife Nancy died in 1818, which might or might not be true - if she did, he likely remarried, and some of the family members could be step-children.

'John Whiteman ... was born August 18, 1772. ... John Whiteman ... died May 8, 1827. ... Rebecca de Remer [first wife of John's son Daniel Jackson Whiteman] ... died May 8, 1827.'

While it is possible that John and his daughter-in-law died the same day (accident or disease), it is also possible that the author confused the dates, and recorded John's death incorrectly. If he died in 1827, it is not clear who the John Whiteman in the 1840 census would be, unless it was a nephew aged 20-29 who was the head of the household with 3 people older than himself in the household. Other family trees do not provide a likely candidate for this.
